This beautiful Bass is now in New York, proudly owned by Christian McBride. After his short visit to Melbourne for the 2013 International Jazz Festival, he performed on this Bass at Hamer Hall and since returing back to the US could not bear to be apart from it.
Benedict Puglisi made two basses to the same Panormo model as an experiment in sound. One has a carved back, the other a flat-back. This has so far proven an interesting and invaluable experiment in instrument making and acoustics. Both instruments were completed in April 2012.
The materials used for Benedicts original instruments are always high quality timbers. For this Panormo model the top is a fine grained Spruce top from Switzerland. Highly Figured Maple from Austria has been used for the scroll, neck, ribs and back.
As part of the experiment, a range of professional bassists compared the two instruments, to find that each had suberb quality of sound but played to different strengths.
These large Panormo style basses would well suit orchestral or solo playing at a professional standard. This carved back model has a powerful tone for solo playing, with superb clarity and responsiveness to arco playing. In the upper registers there is sweetness and good projection.
