The Bushman Puglisi Double Bass

This Double Bass was completed in the early part of 2002. It was made in anticipation of the 2002 South Pacific tour of the Christophorus Symphony Orchestra from Stuttgart, Germany. The Bushman had been utilised by Benedict to showcase his Atelier’s making skills and had been consistently loaned to international and national musicians whilst on tour, or for special occasions.

These have included distinguished performers such as; Harry Shearer (otherwise known as Mr. Burns on The Simpsons); Bassist with Micheline Van Hautem and Mich En Scene at The Famous Spiegeltent; Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac, bassist with the Jacques Loussier Trio; Italian Bassist Marcello Sebatian at the Italian Jazz Festival; and The Bushman has also accompanied the Three Scottish Tenors.

The Bushman was been consistently praised for its versatility, ease of playing and natural, direct tonal qualities.

This original Puglisi design features a high and sensually arched back. The wide-grain, aged Bavarian maple for the back and ribs also give The Bushman much of its depth of tone. The maple neck is shaped with ease of playing firmly in mind and the top is carved and shaped from aged German spruce. Violin corners and long Maggini style f-holes adorn the instrument, whilst the overall finish is dark with an antiqued, spirit based varnish. The Bushman also features the unique Puglisi jigsaw join in the lower bouts.

Features

His instruments were praised for their fullness of tone coupled with responsiveness. This bass features gamba corners and a flat back, as well as custom authentic Viennese wooden pegs and fittings. This is an exceptionally versatile bass. It can be set up as a 5 string or 4 string orchestral bass, or in traditional Viennese tuning. International Jazz legend Christian McBride is now the proud owner of an original Benedict G. Puglisi Double Bass. This Bass landed in the USA early this month and is now being played by Christian.

The 2012 Vincenzo Panormo carved back Bass was first trialed by Christian in Melbourne when he was a featured artist at the 2013 International Jazz festival.

It is truly an honour to have an original instrument with this amazing musician. We are sure that there are some amazing things to come from this relationship.
